Last Snow
In the summer of 2015 I went on a trip to Heiligenblut Austria, in national park the Hohe Tauern. At high altitudes I found a lot of remaining snow from the winter, which was slowly melting away during the hot summer. But I did not only find snowfields, I also came across the Pasterze glacier, the biggest glacier of Austria, located at the foot of the biggest mountain of Austria, the Glossglockner. Sadly this glacier is also slowly melting away. It is already half the size it was in 1856, and it keeps shrinking 25 meters every year.In each photo a unique moment of this constantly changing landscape is captured, because each summer these snowfields will shrink, and after each winter new snowfields will arise.
I tried to capture this glacier and these big and small snowfields with attention to their lines and shapes and the lines and shapes of their surrounding landscape. That is why I chose to convert these pictures to high contrast black and white, so I could emphasize these constanly changing lines and shapes.
Some of the pictures include people to give a sense of perspective, others are more abstract and close-up details. But all of them include the ''Last Snow''.
